Course Goals     

    1. Master the Strategic Analysis Framework through Case Analyses (45%)

    2. Complete a competitive Simulation and presentation of results (55%)

Pre-arrival Requirements     

I. Simulation Activities (Practice Round due January 10)

  1. Read the attached Capstone Team Member Guide 2002.1. Inside the front page of the Team Member Guide is your registration number for the Capsim.com web site and simulation. 
  2. Register at www.capsim.com under Auburn University – MNGT 7166
  3. Complete the three tutorials on your team's Capsim.com web site.  You will find the Tutorialsunder the Team Member Guide Lessons section  in VIII: Resources.  Other tutorials and a summary of the simulation rules are also located there.
  4. Follow the direction in your Team Member Guide to download your team's current conditions onto your disk.  You can then begin making decisions on your disk.  If you have trouble with your software, please contact Capsim's tech support.  The number is on the www.capsim.com web site.
  5. Use either the Capsim conference feature or EMBANET workgroups to communicate with your team members. 
  6. Complete Practice Round 1 and upload the decisions by January 10.  Once decisions are uploaded, all team members can download and check the decisions before submitting them as final decisions.   Be prepared for Practice Round 2 on January 13.

II. Case Preparation (Strategic Analysis due January 8)

  1. Read the Strategic Analysis Framework.
  2. Read the Compaq Corporation Case and use the Strategic Analysis Forms to define a business and analyze Compaq's business strategy in that business.  Use the data in the case.  You need not do any other research.   Submit the completed forms to me by email at boulton@business.auburn.edu by January 8.  Bring a copy of your Strategic Analysis to class on January 13.

Course Grading

Grades will be determined by the following:

  1. Compaq Strategic Analysis = 15%
  2. Tutorials, Personality scales, Team developer exercise (on the Capsim website) = 20%
  3. Peer evaluations = 20%
  4. Simulation performance = 20%
  5. Class participation, case presentations, and bonus questions = 25%

1:15-3:00pm        Prepare Mission and Strategy Statement

3: 15-5:00 pm      Simulation: Complete and Submit Round 1 decisions

7:00-9:00 pm       Read and Prepare Dell Online case

Tuesday, January 14

8:00 –9:45am.    Dr. Armenakis will conduct the first session.

10:15-noon         Simulation: Complete and submit Performance Goals and Round 2 decisions

1:15-3:00pm       Discuss the Dell Online case.

3: 15-5:00 pm     Simulation: Complete and Submit Round 3 decisions

7:00-9:00 pm      Read and Prepare the Strategic Analysis of  Xerox Corp.: The Document Company

Wednesday, January 15

8:00 -9:45 am.      Dr. Armenakis will conduct the first session.

1:15-3:00pm         Read and Prepare a Strategic Analysis of Yahoo! Corporation case

3:15-5:00 pm        Simulation: Complete and Submit Round 7 decisions 

7:00-9:00 pm        Prepare presentation for the Stockholder's meeting
