• The Doonesbury Town Hall The political cartoon, including "flashbacks to earlier years, straw polls etc.
• Amistad Research Center at Tulane: AfroAmerican and ethnic history and culture.
• The Web Museum Network A number of Museums have online exhibitions.
• Digital Tradition Folk Song Base Xerox PARC. Lots of fun. If you have a sound card (or a Mac) you can hear the melodies of most of these songs. WARNING: Not too surprisingly, the lyrics to a collect ion of over 4000 folk songs vary from innocent to obscene.

  A Few Good Web Resources for creating Web sites.

• Writing HTML A really good tutorial created by Maricopa Community College (Phoenix). Can be downloaded in IBM, Mac, and UNIX versions so you can work on it at your desk.
• Web Style Manual "This manual describes the design principles used to create the pages within the Center for Advanced Instructional Media's (C/AIM) World Wide Web site. This is not an introduction to HTML authoring. . . ." Fills a big hole in Web page development.
• Instructional Media Group includes reference materials and templates for developing course materials.

• Yahoo A friendly, general purpose index with search capabilities. Often a good place to start, especially for browsing.
• The WWW Virtual Library Different subject areas are maintained by different persons all around the world. Varies in quality.
• Galaxy Subcategories are displayed in a paragraph format under the main categories.
• Clearinghouse for Subject-oriented Internet Resource Guides Annotated Internet bibliographies on a wide variety of subjects.

  Particular

• Index of Listservs, Usenet groups, FTP sites

  Listserv

  An e-mail discussion group focused on a particular topic. Comments sent to the listserv are received by all the members of the group. This is often a good place to ask questions, especially if you have done some basic research. Some listservs are mo derated, others not. Technical information explaining listserv commands and a very large file with detailed information about listservs is also available.

  Usenet

  A discussion group similar in many ways to a listserv except that (1) the discussion is not carried on by e-mail. Rather, whenever you connect to the news group you have access to the discussion that has occured since last time. Many feel that usenet group participants tend to be less scholarly, more likely to indulge in "flaming" other participants.

  FTP

  File Transfer Protocol: FTP is a procedure for moving files from one computer to another. It is frequently used with large files (e.g. novels), images, and computer programs.

Web Databases

General
• Alta Vista Supports both elementary and advanced search options with boolean (and, or, not) operators. I particulary like the fact that you can specify phrases that are several words long by enclosing them in quotation marks. (i.e. You can look up "hot dogs" without finding information about fires or beagles.)
• Inktomi Fast
• Open Text Web Provides different search options depending on your need.
• Lycos At Carnegie Mellon University. This has both an elementary and a complex search procedure.
• Veronica A Gopherspace search tool. This site includes information about how to formulate queries on Veronica.
• The World Wide Web Worm One of the oldest search engines on the Web. Creates a database of titles and anchors (link words.)
• WebCrawler Indexes contents, titles, anchors, and URLs.

  Geographical Searching

• Virtual Tourist I A visual interface to WWW and other information servers. (A good way to find the server of a particular University.)
• Virtual Tourist II similar to Virtual Tourist I, but focuses on Tourism and City information.
