Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). This is the theory of the macroscopic interaction of electrically conducting fluids with a magnetic field. It is of importance in connection with many engineering problems such as plasma confinement, liquid-metal cooling of nuclear reactors, and electromagnetic casting. It also finds applications in geophysics and astronomy.
Paul Schmidt and I have been doing research in magnetohydrodynamics, we have a non-technical abstract and a somewhat technical abstract of our research which is being supported by a grant from the NSF. For the real thing you should really look at our publications.
Recently we were invited to organize a minisymposium on magnetohydrodynamics at the 1998 SIAM Annual Meeting to be held during the week of July 13--17 in Toronto, Canada.
In the past we were invited to organize a special session on magnetohydrodynamics at the Second World Congress of Nonlinear Analysts held in Greece 1996.
