Faculty Getting Started

We are excited in your interest with distance learning. We hope that these steps will help you in bringing your ideas for a distance education class to a reality.

Below are the basic directions on where to begin on getting your course approved and developed.
  1. Decide you want to teach a distance course. Contact DLOT Member. DLOT contact information can be found here.
  2. A DLOT Member will have a face-to-face consultation with you. At that point, if you wish to continue developing your online course, you will need to fill out a Teaching Agreement Form with DLOT. Additionally, you will fill out a UPO 10 Form for our department so that you can get paid for the development of the class.

NOTE ON UPO-10: You should only fill out the Name, Title, Department, Banner Number, and Type Appointment Area. Once these areas are filled out, DLOT will complete the rest of the form and send it off for approval.

  3. Development of the course will begin. At the same time, your course must go through the University's Course Curriculum process. DLOT will help you with this process.
  4. Once your course is approved, it may not quite be ready to be offered. Development on the course needs to be completed before the course can be offered. However, since devlopment will be occuring during the approval process, chances are it will be close to completion once approval has been acquired.
University Curriculum Committee Paperwork

To go through the University Curriculum Committee, you will need a minimum of five items (additional items may be required in order to justify approval for your course). The committee only meets once a month, so once your paperwork has been submitted, it can easily take 6 months or more to complete. This is why development begins prior to approval.

Documents Needed:
  1. An On-Campus Syllabus of your current course.
  2. A modified Off-Campus Syllabus for the new distance course
  3. A Rationale Document for the new distance course
  4. A completed Add/Edit/Delete Course Form
  5. A memo to your department chair requesting / justifying your new online course
Approval Process:
  1. Obtain all signatures required on the above documents.
  2. The required documents are then put forward to your College's Curriculum Committee by your department chair for recommendations and approval.
  3. Revise any edits suggested by your College's Curriculum Committee and resubmit. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until approved by the College's Curriculum Committee
  4. (If Necessary) - The documents are then sent to the Graduate School Dean for approval. This is usually done simeltaneously with sending the paperwork to the University Curriculum Committee.
  5. The required paperwork is then moved to the University Curriculum Committee. You will be notified when your course is to appear before the committee. We strongly recommend you attend the meeting if possible. Also, a member of the DLOT can attend with you if requested.
  6. Make any edits and recommendations proposed by the University Curriculum Committee and resubmit.
  7. Continue steps 4 and 5 until your class has been approved by the University Curriculum Committee.
  8. Once approved, your class is ready to be offered.
