Membership Eligibility

The criteria and limits observed in electing persons to membership are determined by each individual chapter, but always within the framework of the Chapter's Bylaws. At Auburn, eligibility for membership in The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is determined by the following criteria:

  • Seniors may be elected who are in the upper 5 percent of a graduating class and have completed at least 45 semester hours in residence at Auburn with a minimum overall GPA of 3.39 on all courses attempted at Auburn. No student with a GPA of 3.59 or higher will be excluded by virtue of the 5 percent quota. Seniors are elected the semester they are awarded degrees.
  • Juniors shall be considered eligible for membership provided they have completed a minimum of 75 semester hours (may include advanced standing credit), 38 of these 75 semester hours must have been in residence at Auburn and these 38 hours may not include advanced standing credit. Juniors must have a minimum GPA of 3.69 on all courses attempted at Auburn. Juniors will not be included in the 5 percent quota.
  • Graduate students may be elected, but their number must not exceed 5 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees and they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.69 or better on all graduate courses. Graduate students are elected in the semester they are awarded degrees. No graduate student with a GPA of 4.00 will be excluded by the 5 percent quota.
  • Faculty members and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction may be elected to membership in limited numbers.
  • An occasional honorary or distinguished member may be elected by a chapter, with the approval of the Board of Directors.
