TEXT: John Campbell ‑ Map Use &
Analysis
Geog-3810
is an introduction to practical cartography.
The objectives of the course are:
1)
develop the skills necessary to produce low-cost, publication-quality maps;
2)
consider important concepts of map design and construction;
3)
compare manual and computerized production options;
4)
examine linkages between cartography and other geographical analysis tools
including GIS and remotely sensed imagery.
Projects, Exercises, Tests and Grades:
Your
final grade will be based on the following:
1) Major projects. Six major projects will be assigned during
the semester. Instructions will be
passed out and discussed in class, and you will have approximately two weeks to
complete each one. If a project is
turned in late, its grade will be affected. You may need to purchase some
basic drafting supplies if these are not already available. The sum of your
grades on all projects will comprise 45% of your final grade.
2) Two major tests will be
administered. Each will cover material presented in class and text book
assigned readings from the previous weeks.
Each test will comprise 15% of your final grade.
3) Final exam. An exam over the materials of the course will
be given at the end of the semester at the scheduled time. This will comprise 15% of your final grade.
4) Class participation. This is
reflected attendance, completion of short in-class and take-home exercises,
alertness and attentiveness during lectures, etc. This element will comprise 10% of your
final grade.
