TEXT: De Blij, H. & Muller, P. Concepts and Regions in Geography. (Third ed. preferable)
(Readings done outside of class)
ATLAS: Hudson, J. (ed) Goode's World Atlas Rand McNally. (or another approved atlas).
(Recommended: Atlas will be used in class, and you will be tested on map locations)
Geog-1010
is an introduction to the major regions of the World and to some important
concepts in geography. The course
examines aspects of the physical, economic, social, and political landscapes,
and by the end of the semester you should know much more about the world in
which we live. You will also learn something about the discipline of geography;
the significance of maps, our relationship with the physical environment, and
the importance of spatial interaction.
Class Attendance:
Class
attendance will be checked daily and may influence your final grade in a
borderline situation and in the assignment of any bonus points. Unexcused absence from a test or the final
exam will result in a grade of
"0" (zero). Tests for which
absences are excused will be made up after the final exam. Be aware that
repeated absences on other days will significantly affect your grade because
much of the class material is not covered in the textbook.
Office Hours:
I
will usually be available mornings after 7:30 a.m. except during my class
periods. If I am not in the office,
check with the departmental secretary who may have information about my
schedule. I can meet with you by
appointment at other times if necessary.
Tests and Grades:
An
evaluation of your work will be based on three major tests and a final exam.
Each test and the final exam will constitute 1/4 of your final grade. The tests and final exam will be objective,
and most of the questions will be of a multiple choice format. A number grade
(0-100 scale) is awarded for each test, but letter grades will be assigned only
at the end of the term. Bonus points may occasionally be granted if a test is
judged to be unduly difficult.
Attendance may be considered when bonus points are assigned. Some subjective discretion is included in the
final grade assignment in order to reward involvement in the course as shown by
class attendance, participation, etc.
